Embracing each phase of life

A wise woman recently told me, "when your hair is more white than brown, it’s time to stop dying".

I’ve dyed my hair since I was in my 20s. I remember going to get a haircut after Alex was born and the lady told me she could help me out. At first, I wasn’t accepting. Within a few months, I started. I’ve dyed it myself and had others do it for me. It was to the point that I did it every month. Within two weeks after dying it, I had to cover up my roots with the hair color spray. It was a full time job.

I dyed my hair for the last time the end of August 2020 before we moved to India. At first, I didn’t know where to buy hair dye when we arrived. Then I bought a box and decided to wait a few weeks until our trip north before I dyed it. We weren’t going anywhere anyway before our trip. At the time of our trip, it had been almost two months since I dyed it. With the advice of others, I decided to embrace my natural color. I had told my kids that my natural “brown” color was darker than what I was dying it. It’s been interesting to see what it looks like as it grows out.  It’s still very dark on the underside. Some sections in the front are pure white. It's been a full year now and I can't wait for the top to grow out so I can cut off all the dark.

Sometimes I like the new look. Other times I feel like it makes me look older. Here is to embracing the real you and to stop following the pressure that society creates on women to follow beauty trends to be young. There is beauty in each phase of life.
