Merry Christmas

It’s our first Christmas and yet doesn’t quite feel like it. There aren’t any lights on houses or businesses. No Christmas music playing in stores or on the radio. No commercials on tv pushing the latest item. The weather is hot and muggy.

I tried my best to use what we had to decorate the house to bring in the spirit. We made snowflakes, a red and green chain and printed photos of the manger scene. What I really wanted was a tree. Using some cardboard scraps, construction paper and some water colors, I constructed this tree. Liam put the final touches on it with an origami star.

The snowflakes are visible from the passing road.  Others have commented about how much we decorated for Christmas, which is funny because it’s really not that much.  I just don’t think people decorate much here. We heard that Christians in India hang stars from their windows and place lights on their rooftops. We are still looking for them at houses around. To help the rum-drummy attitude we were all feeling, Dennis found a place that sold Christmas decorations.  We were able to get 2 stars and a tree.  The kids didn’t know and loved it when we showed up to surprise them.

Our church branch is creating a zoom recording for Christmas.  They have asked us to participate.  Heather  had to sing two lines of Oh Come All Ye Faithful.  Dennis had to submit his testimony of the Savior. Emma dressed as Mary and submitted her singing two songs: Footsteps and I Will Go and Do.  Liam had to dress up as a Wiseman.  We have limited supplies and had to get creative for their costumes.

Emma has a bedsheet for her headwear.  Liam wore a sheet for his robe.  We used the bandanas from our visit to the Golden Temple to make a hat.  If you look closely, he has a baby peacock feather tucked in the front.  His present is a gold colored pot we were given for Diwali.  We couldn’t find a scarf to hang down the front so we commandeered Dennis pants.  From the front, you don’t even know.

Despite the differences in celebration, we are glad to know of Christ’s birth.  He is the real reason for the season.  Without him, there would be no hope, no joy, and no future.

Merry Christmas!
